The 6-Second Reality
Recruiters spend an average of 6-7 seconds on initial resume screening. In that tiny window, certain mistakes trigger an immediate rejection. Here are the 12 most common ones.
Formatting & Structure Mistakes
1. Wall of text with no clear sections β recruiters can't find what they need quickly.
2. Using a creative or non-standard format β it might look cool but fails ATS parsing.
3. Including a photo (in the US/UK) β it introduces bias and takes up valuable space.
4. Going beyond 2 pages β unless you're a senior executive, keep it concise.
Content Mistakes

5. Generic objective statement β "Seeking a challenging position..." tells the recruiter nothing.
6. Listing responsibilities instead of achievements β "Responsible for sales" vs "Grew territory revenue by 45% in 12 months."
7. Including irrelevant experience β your high school summer job doesn't belong on a senior developer resume.
8. Unexplained employment gaps β brief gaps are fine, but long ones need context.
Technical Mistakes
9. Typos and grammatical errors β instant credibility killer. Proofread, then proofread again.
10. Using a non-professional email β yourname@gmail.com is fine; partyanimal2000@hotmail.com is not.
11. Broken or outdated links β if you include a portfolio URL, make sure it works.
12. Not tailoring for the specific role β sending the same resume to every job says "I don't care enough to customize."
